Unusual winter... for their good!

Weather here, in PA is amazingly warm this winter. Puppies are taking full advantage of it and enjoying their games outside... This was one of our today's walks... even it was not that long, but it gave them possibility to explore, bond with each other and humans and use natural terrain for great exercises without investing at expensive agility equipment! In fact agility equipment will not be any good for puppies of this age, but they can do good deal of climbing and walking on hilly side for their own good... naturally we only do it because of weather is the way it is and all puppies were vaccinated a while ago.

Dogs are amazing trainers. Believe my word, based on many years of living together with our dogs and observing just how good they are with training of their humans. And schnauzers are brilliant in that, so carefully watching us, collecting evidence of our weaknesses , learning our push -buttons and using them to get a pleasant for them,schnauzers, response . Probably,all our puppies families remember me mentioned that "push-button" theory when you got your puppy, don't you,guys? :-)

One of the most successful way to make humane to do what dog want is to use " I-am - going -to - starve -to-death" tactic. Not a lot of people can stand their dog missing a meal. Often it starts very innocent way - morning, you have to go to job, million things need to be done before you leave . Familiar with this? I am. :-)
And here he is - Thee Dog. And his bowl with food, what , for some of his own reason, dog did not touch.
In human mind ( well, no offend, in woman's mind for sure ) all kind of scary thoughts start immediately run onto each other "is my doggy sick? I have to stay home...I can't stay home,not today... what if he is really sick, his eyes are so sad...why he did not eat? ". When we short in time , brain have tendency not to think long-term programs, but offer us most quick and seems to be logical at the moment solution. Here , bowl with food already picked up ,food topped with cheese . And - moment later it's gone. Dog is not going to die from starvation. You are not going to run whole day thinking only "what if he is sick'. It did the trick.
You got a peace of mind. Dog got food.And cheese. And - perfect lesson how to make human to give him cheese on a top of it.

Next time he will try to push you a bit more. Some more of a struggle look on his sweet face , few more minutes /hours of not touching his food. What would be your breaking point be?
And,like I said, schnauzers are masters in manipulating of their humans. We have a dog in the family, who,probably, deserved a professor in human study title. Lots of you remember our black Quincy. She belong to our daughter , and when our girl moved out of nestle, Quincy moved with her. This is when the fun begun. :-) At first, everything was all right. Then little Quincy start slowly pulling small tests on Veronica ,refusing to eat dry food...then the other kind of dry food...super-holistic food...canned food. The funny part is - while the little poor doggy was visiting us to stay for day or two, as our daughter was working weird hours job, Quincy was just her usual self - "vacuum-cleaner like" food gulping dog , same very food she totally refused to eat an hour ago at home.

Veronica decided to switch the dog on home-cooked meals only ( we usually are using half-and-a half ration for our dogs ). It was a huge relieve. Dog and humans were happy and world was perfect. For a while.
But last evening I had a phone call from our daughter. In the morning Quincy refused chicken. In the evening bowl with rice and beef dinner was left untouched. Quincy with sadness and straggle imprinted in eyes was pulling a" hungry dog guilt" trick on her family from the pillow. I clearly start to feel a notes of stress in my child voice .

I do not know how far this dog can bring this game. But look like grilled hamburger what our son-in-law presented her did not meet any objections. :-)

Sammy's litter - vet office visit video.

Today we went to our wonderful vet office. It was a totally new experience for puppies, but they weren't scared a bit, just curious.

They got to meet with both our vets adorable Lisa and always-trying-to-be-serious doctor Allan, not counting all their office stuff vet technicians and assistants. We are very pleased how puppies acted and they all got clean bill of health too. Naturally You will not see me on a video (but you will see plenty of Irina!), somebody has to run camera. So... here they all are.. Enjoy!

Puppy Play (Sammy's puppies getting use to the Great Outdoors!)

Weather is still way to warm for this season and we taking advantage of it by taking puppies out every time it is nice and warm there..

Today they had something new to do and to learn - we put collars and harnesses on little ones and let them run around. Every time you do something like that in your house, puppy is very destructed with new "something" what you put on him. However if it is a element of nice game outside, it is not as bad any more and soon they forget about the fact - they have to ware something... what they not so sure they want to ware..

It was very successful session - they learned something new and... it wasn't scary!

Sammy's puppies are growing.

Our weather here in PA is staying unusually warm. Few days ago we reached 60F here and even slightly over. Sure it was great opportunity to take puppies in the yard and introduce them to the Great Outdoors!

Irina brought them out two at the time to make it "more personal".

We hope they had good time exploring and looking around.

..and of course some of them liked it better then others!..

Naturally I had to grab my camera, so we can share this experience with you.

End of January/beginning of February! I can not believe it!

And here I am - taking pictures of fat cute pups playing in the green grass!

Jasmin's litter was born!

Just like you can see, Mommy Jasmin was expecting... for the last time! I'm going to retire her after this liter.

Normally Jasmine has about even amount of black and Black/silver babies, but this time she surprised us with complete litter of blacks. I knew she will come up with something "special" at the end and she did.

We ended up with 5 beautiful puppies - 3 boys and 2 girls. After jasmine is done feeding and taking care of them, she will go to her new home and live long and happily ever after with Our Veronika

and her soon-to-be-a husband Todd. Veronica already has Jasmine's daughter, Quincy, what she took along when she moved out to her finance and now jasmine will be second dog in their house to make Quincy a company. Sure they both will be visiting often, so it is not really like saying "goodbye!".

With some latest events we again slightly behind on our blogging process...

Unfortunately this time little puppy-girl didn't make it. But good news are - all 4 of her litter-mates

are doing great and growing big and strong. I love them all!

We took a lot of great photos right after they open their eyes, but i didn't post it here... so I do it now.

Car Stolen with Schnauzer Inside in Landover, MD!..

We didn't post for a while due busy fall season... cleaning, preparations to upcoming winter etc... And luckily - nothing urgent to blah about... (what is good at this case).

I'm going to post some more photos for all of you to enjoy sometime soon. We getting plenty of those from our puppy-owners, and some are just too cute not to share!...

We also getting inquiries about future litters... This is simple - we generally trying NOT to have any dogs around Christmas time for several reasons, therefore currently we do not have any puppies available.

We may have however a litter born at the very end of 2011. If everything goes well, they should be ready to go to their new homes at the end of February - beginning of March. Those should be Black/Silver puppies.

We also planning breed our Jasmine when she will come in season (what could be just about any time now). Her litter should be ready at March/April and we may have Black/Silver and solid black puppies available.

Week went by and there are only 4 of them left - nice black boy from Beauty and Teddy and 3 handsom black/silver gangsters from Bobby and Timmy. Naturally we let them all stay and play together, so the black one will not feel too lonely. They got along just great and played whole day... unless they were sleeping or

demanding their food.

Today we offered them a new toy to play with - big cardboard box. and they totally loved it!.. one more lesson - toys do not have to be expensive... they just have to be FUN!

It was wonderful day here, in Pennsylvania. Sunny and no rain, 80 degrees warm. We took Bobby's puppies outside to play a little and we enjoyed watching them play while they enjoyed all those colorful leaves around our little table and chairs... Sure we had to grab that camera and this is what resulted this little adventure...

Places and Faces...

Now we had it all... or just about all - tornado, flood and earthquake!... And house is still standing and dogs didn't really care... They do not know much about those things, therefore they care less... not like we do...

Of course all those above mentioned disaster weren't the true reason we didn't do much of a blogging lately... The real reason was my trip to Wyoming and Idaho - to see some friends - painters and dog breeders. And also just to see... and it was a lot to see other then schnauzers. And some of faces I met there were looking like this one...

...or like those two...

It was all great, but now I'm back to PA to something less vicious (if not to mention our weather lately).

So far I was away, Irina did great job on feeding of all those puppies and they grew so big, that I simply can not any more fit both litters at one the same blog post.

Therefore today I only will do update on Beauty/Teddy litter.

Time is flying fast. We are getting a lot of funny pictures, but not much time to post it all. However... because we know you all are waiting for those updates, here is a mos urgent news - little guys have their eye open! And now not only we can see them, but they can see us as well...

Casya, our matriarch schnauzer is laying on a new piece of doggy furniture, right beside of pen with Bobby's puppies. She is making sure about Law and Order and doesn't let youngsters to play too intensively around puppy-nestles. Something spotted behind Casya is our old Fox Terrier - Dora. Cuddling in her favorite plush blanket and doesn't care who is up to what.

Two black girls. Naturally also from Beauty.

3 Black/Silver girls... not so obviously, but still from Beauty...

And guess what?... Two Black/Silver boys... and also from Beauty!

Sometimes we can not believe we have 8 puppies in her litter, but... we do!

And those 4 gangsters are Bobby's boys. All Black/Silver, just like their Mom.

... And two beautiful Black/Silver ladies... also from Bobby.

One of them will be called "Katy". Can not tell witch one yet,

but she is very much loved by her family.

Beauty and Bobby became Mothers.

Beauty and Bobby's litters might be the last two litters we will have available in 2011...

We expected their puppies right before I left for my "art trip", but... they waited, and waited... till I left.

And then they totally refused to deal with any puppies, till the day I was back home.

Then Bobby gave me that very look and I told to Irina: "OK. Today we are going to have puppies". And we did. Technically - Bobby did, we just were helping.

Of course poor Beauty felt left along and abandoned... she had no choice, but start with her puppies at the same very day, what gave us about 12 hours of laboring job.

Result - was two half-alive us (that would be Irina and myself) and bunch of much more lively puppies.

Total count of 14... Ouch!... (I see a LOT of work in our nearest future.)

For those of you who is interested - we didn't have any Salt/Pepper puppies and not going to have any till later in 2012. But we have some blacks

and 10 or so Black/Silvers and some of them are still available. Naturally I'll try to post some updates on what is going on, but don't expect too much, I have a lot of other things to do beside of blogging... So it all will be here... SOMETIME. :-)

Here we go... another show season for another debutant... (Feels like we just started with Sammy's shows, but Sammy is back home for a while already and Bea took over)

Bea is one of our youngsters and latest show project. She is bred, co-owned and shown exclusively by our friend John Constantine (kennel "Adamis") and... of course spoiled and loved by us.

Bea took everybody by surprise and managed to get her BOTH major at her very first show weekend and it basically mean that it will not take long to see this girl finished. Very proud of her. Not just beautiful, but very smart pup. Honored to have her in our house.

Thank You, John for all you have done!

Sophies' liter is 6 weeks old.

With me being away for a few days (art-related expedition), our blogging was slow..

Sorry for this fact. But... on a good note we are going to post few apdates at once...

First one - about Sophie and her puppies.

Sophie's puppies got abigger playground now... They like it. However it gave their Mom a message that her kids are big enough to handle things on their own and she wants back at her own cage.

And she wants in NOW. So she went back at her personal apartment and still checking on those puppies, but doesn't spend all her time with them any more... Just visiting. And this is a last time when she allowed them to nurse (photo above). They do not miss her too much and justplaying with each other and eating well without Mom being involved into this process.

Sophie's litter is month old!

Time is flying fast!... Sophie's little puppies just turned to be month old few days ago...

But they such a babies yet (BIG babies!) During next few weeks they will be growing and developing rapidly, but now we still enjoy our last days of quiet time... They are not demanding too much yet, but they sure getting there!

Sophie's the only daughter. being the only girl she is very much loved by everybody.

Sophie's boys are looking just like their father, Teddy used to look when he was a pup...

Amazing to see faces of your older dogs in those little puppies!..

Of course Teddy was and still is one of my personal all-time-favorites.

therefore I'm very pleased to see his face in those little ones.

And even they look alike with their dad and with each other, they all are so different.

Often Irina and I hear the same question over and over again: how do you know which one is which? But when you see them every day it is not really hard to tell the difference. I can see it clearly even in those pictures. Can You?...

PS: Oh, BTW, boys are still available and little girl has a home already!

Kasya's new adventures.

Yesterday evening, when heat went down a little bit (it was only about 85F, not waaay over 90,

as the rest of the day), we decided to sneak out with camera to spend some time on the farm with our horses, do some photoshoot of farm-land around and visit our favorite Cove Creek. As soon I grabbed bag with our cameras, our smart Kasya (who is now 9 years young and saw it all!) quickly realized that we are going for the walk and will have some adventures, what she, Kasya, couldn't miss!

She insisted to go along and we took her out not without some reasonable doubts, because she never was around horses before.

Very quietly, trying not to get attention of other dogs, we went out though the back door and off we went!

This time Kasya met up-close-and-personal with Betty, my oldest mare, dearly loved and spoiled.

Wierd thing about it- they both were born at the same day (and the same year!).

Betty used to the dogs and didn't care, if one more was around. She clearly enjoyed her grass and apples. With all my wish to go for the ride it was very bad idea with temperature staying so high, so we just walked around and had good time, while Irina was playing with one of our cameras.

Kasya was hinging on there... literally!

Then betty finally finished her apple and decided to check out the dog. I think they both liked it.

I sure did! I always was curious how those two will get along.

Then we went for the walk in the woods... Not the easy walk -lot of rock climbing, steams crossing etc.

now Ira got to walk Kasya and carry camera bag and I was running the show with my Canon.

Just like I say - it was a lot of climbing... and Kassandra did just great!

All dog need in situation like that it is a very trained human to carry dog around!

(and Irina is very well taught to do those kind of things!)

This was a part of stream right above waterfalls. pretty big stream with some pretty big rocks laying across

of it... Girls did great job of crossing over and me on other hand... no so much. I ended up in the stream thinking ONLY about saving of camera... what I naturally did. (This is why you will see more pictures!)

Of course as soon I took my eyes off them to shoot something other then them too,

they already were up on the tree!

Then Kasya went in the field of wild-grown myrtle and clearly enjoyed herself in the shade.

All pass-ways are going home after all... So to the car we went.

Food is always attractive!

When we introducing puppies to new environment, subjects or situations, it is always good idea to give them at the same time something what they are very comfortable and familiar with... For instance - presence of their Mom is always helpful, but even more so will be presence of food.

Today, soon after they turned 5 weeks, we introduced them to several new factors at the same time... Instead of their small puppy-walking area they were taken in big kennel (after all adult dogs were put to eat and kennel was washed and disinfected). We put there one of our rubber mats, what pups never were on before. Also - instead of familiar ceramic bowls puppy got their food in 3 different unfamiliar bowels... And to top all it off - we took them out inside of Sherpa-bag (usually we would carry them in-hands).

With all of above they weren't scared or confused as soon they recognized familiar and tempting smell of their food. It was gone in about 3 minutes, just as long as it took me to shoot this video.

Today's goal was achived and transition to big playground went totally smooth. next time they are going there together with Mom and will learn even more.

And here is another update - yes, they are already turn month old! We got a basket out to honor "International Picnic Day" (and who only came up with that anyway?)

We are "picnicking" right on the floor of our living room, because it is so hot outside that we could cook those hot dogs right one the concrete surface of our kennel playground....

All dogs are inside too... for some reason none of them what to feel like a hot dog...

As for puppies - they didn't care. They never lived out of living room yet and feel pretty cool about it... (literally... and not so literally, thank you to our central AC system).

Today we went to meet with Carol and Ron and finally brought home our Sammy (CH Shazzam Of Oz Something Else). She was away from us and the rest of dogs for extended period of time and everybody was anticipating, how meeting with the rest of pack will look like... It was easy. Lulu, Sammy's Mom was a one of the first to approach her. Sammy immediately plopped at her back pink belly up and was showing everybody, that she is peaceful and only want to play. Most of dogs recognized her and only puppies had some questions, but also didn't have any problems.

It was the best family reunion I ever attended! Welcome back, Sammy!

Whole day of work and luckily it was all work with dogs - some grooming, some papers, two trips to vet office with regular stuff (it would be just one, if I wouldn't forget home half of impotent items!)

Meanwhile Lacy and her pups are working as well. Lacy is keeping her Milk Bar open and puppies...

their job is to eat and of course to grow, what they successfully do.

And at my opinion they are getting pretty big.

Leila on the table. Irina is near by... I'm somewhere with camera-phone.

Went today to our vets for rabies vaccination. "Persona of the Day" was Leila and two of our youngest residents - Gina and Roy went along with her. Of course Leila taught them a lesson "how to be all you can" and was as vocal as only Leila can be. This dog has her own opinion about everything and everybody. By the end of this visit pups did pretty good on a leash and Leila was slightly puzzled with the question "Where is my other blue ribbon?". She didn't get one, just a rabies shot. However she enjoyed herself when we put her on the table - just like when it was show time with ribbons and prizes. This dog loves to be a star!

Yes, we are about two weeks old, have our little eyes open and tails are gone. I'm posting only a quick update, because naturally we do not have much of free time to play with video... Lot of work needs to be done with cleaning up after that storm we had here... but puppies do not care! They just growing, sleeping and eating. This is their job to do for the moment....

Tornado problems.

Sorry to report, we were offline for few days. Our village got hit with tornado in the middle of last week and we just got our power back. Lots of damage to property, but family and all dogs are perfectly OK. More information will be posted later.

Our latest news: Shazzam of Oz Something Else "Sammy" just got her last major win and so her title of AKC Champion. Thank You Carol and Ron Meitzler for taking of such a great care of Sammy and for taking her all the way up!

And now back to Sammy's sister, Lacy and her adorable puppies.

Everybody is doing great. Lacy learned very quickly how to be a good Mom and babies are growing like those weeds in our kitchen garden (flooded with the water, so we can not even get there).

This morning I got a very familiar e-mail from my dear friend and handler, Carol, stating then an hour later my dog need to be entered at her first spring show cluster.... I spend about 20 minutes jumping from one show site to another and Boom - done - she is entered for her first show weekend.

We will keep our fingers crossed for her. Sammy is in need of one more major to have her Title of American Champion and then she may go back to Mom be a spoiled brat and hopefully

have some beautiful babies later on this season.

5 weeks update on growing puppies.

Puppies are growing up. And together with them 'growing up' their living area.

At first we extended their playground twice and added "bathroom" area with newspapers.

this is a beginning stage of their potty-training. Of course right now you can see how Mommy Jasmine

uses that very 'potty area' to take a brake from her litter.

Still - she feels she needs to keep eye on them and so she does.

This is how two "puppy units are looking side-by-side with 'potty-areas" attached.

mean while adult dogs are providing needful interaction and socialization for little one just by doing

what they like to do the most - simply playing around.

Few days later, after puppies got the point what newspapers are for, their living area extended again for the day-time play and games. At night we taking half of it down and keeping it simple - "bed and bathroom only".

Puppies now can see and interact with other dogs, but only trough their fence.

It is safer this way, so far they are still so small - nobody will step on them, or scary them

and Mommies will not get any ideas about "somebody going to still their baby".

Now they more active and therefore need more room to play with their toys

...and with each other!....

..and with their humans!...

Updates on 3 week old puppies.

Basya's litter is 3 weeks old today. And Jasmine's babies older for 4 days.
We never stop to be amazed , watching them grow at these early weeks of their life.
and observe such a rapid neurological growth and development.
Puppies are born totally depended of their mother. They are very temperature sensitive ,
their eyes and ears closed, can't walk and wriggle to get to the Mom's milk ,and can't even eliminate without stimulation.
Mom will feed them, clean them, and clean up after them.
And originally -they have tails! :-)

Now at 3 weeks the eyes and ears open ( well, eyes are still squinty ,

and this is a main reason why you don't see much of individual pictures of puppies - bright light in photoshoot isn't good for their eyes now :-) ) ,dew claws are removed, tails are cropped. Puppies can stand on their legs and start walking. They don't need stimulation for elimination anymore.

Every day the pups are becoming more and more mobile ,moving all around nestle.We have good heavy blankets with non-slippery structure in the puppy boxes, what given puppies good support when they start to try their legs,but still are wobbly and unsteady .

Social behavior start to develop -puppies interact with each other , we can see very beginning of play movements, touches with front paws, licking each other faces ,sometimes try to fallow each other.
They start to be more aware of the world , and even they don't pay much attention on the dogs and humans outside of box, but they start to react on humane voice while we are holding them, and concentrating more on movement around them.

Some of them found their voices , and we hear funny growling or squeaking noises from Jasmine's box and something remaining best of all a cat's purring sound - from Basya's .

What we have done and observed during these weeks ( not counting feeding the Moms- which are eating as crocodiles , and washing puppy's blankets every day) :

1. Right after birth and at first two weeks we weight puppies every day to see if they gain. After two weeks we still weight them, but not so often, just enough to see the line of each of them growing.

Pups double or almost triple their birth weight at first week and kept gaining. Interesting to see different dynamics of growing between two litters. Weighted at two weeks old, Jasmine's puppies were from 15 to 19 oz , and Basya's were from 20 to 25 oz. Both Jasmine and Basya had pups before , so we know how they grows and also can compare the weight chart from previous litters. Basya's pups always grow rapidly and look big and chubby, when Jasmine's pups always look smaller compare to them. However, when we see grown up dogs from both those litters, they all are about the same size.

In a period from two to three weeks also a picture of bigger/smaller puppies changed among Jasmine's puppies. Now two girls are the champions and about the same size with each other, despair the fact black girl was smaller then black/silver at birth , and smaller then two boys for two weeks. Now all boys are behind!
One black and black/silver boys smallest from the group, but gaining well for their own.

2. Early neurological stimulation exercises for each puppy ( from third to sixteen day ) .
ENS , other way known as Bio Sensor , is great program of stimulation of puppies by putting them through five exercises :Tactile stimulation ,Head held erect ,Head pointed down ,Supine position ,Thermal stimulation . Better development, stronger heart and immune system, higher trainability was noticed as a result of this program, started as a special program for service and working dogs. We have a good result with ENS as well, using it for the last 12 years, and during the exercises we also can observe a personality of each puppy.

3. Dew claws are removed, Tails are cropped.

4.Worming the puppies! Worming started at 2 weeks,repeated at 3. It will be continued till pups ready to go home, and every new family will have a record of worming ( and shots).

5. Trimming nails. Puppy's nails at this age growing very quickly , and they are sharp. Trimming puppy's nails every 5 days prevent Mom from being scratched while pups are nursing,and keep pup's legs on correct position when they start walking.
By the time we are done to trim nails in both litter, each time we had trimmed 176 little nails. :-) Every 5 dais. You do the math for 3 these three weeks. :-)

6. Handling , holding, talking and spoiling every one of them daily.

7. Charting weight gain, activity level , specific behavior and like/dislike of each puppy , making notes what later will play a role in the temperament classification and will help us to give new families better recommendations about training and living with their pup, or help them to choose the right one.

8. Started supplementary feeding of Jasmine's litter at 3 weeks. Basya's litter of 4 doesn't need it to be started till later,perhaps, at 4-4,5 weeks. Jasmine's babies can benefit from trying some food earlier.
First food is always mix of concentrated or whole goat milk with plain yogurt.
At 3 weeks old puppies are able to lap liquid food. Doesn't mean they do it too good. :-)

9. As puppies start to walk more and more, we are getting ready to expand their nestle box . Next update of puppy home will include potty area . This is a last picture of two side by side nestle boxes without extension yet.

We often getting the same question time after time: how you can tell the difference between Black/Silver and Salt/Pepper puppies in newborns?

It is not hard if you will look behind of puppy's ears. S/P puppy always will have some "Salt" at that area and B/S puppy always will have it black.

Out of this 4 puppies on a photo above only one is S/P.

It is a dinner time! And Jasmine is a dinner....

I feel so much better after Basya also had her pups and everybody is OK.

Now it is my favorite feeding/cleaning/spoiling time.

Sorry to disappoint everyone waiting for S/P puppies, she again had B/S litter. Just how it goes: one S/P boy and the rest all are Black/Silver. But what are nice pups!

It will be last litter for Basya, she goes at well deserved retirement after she is done with feeding.

Jasmine just had another "Jasmine's typical litter" of 9. I call them "Seven Dwarfs and Two Princesses", because naturally they are 7 boys and 2 girls. And don't think they are small! All pups are over 5oz and doing really great. Jasmine is exceptional mother, so happy to deal with delivery and Mom like this one.

Why did we start this blog ?...

I was thinking fr a while to start blog about our schnauzers, but I only have so much time to do it all.... therefore I was putting this project for later time after time.Finally I came to conclusion that it takes significantly more time to repeat the same information to every person who is interested about "how-to" we raise, feed, groom etc our dogs. And then (most disappointing part) after you explain it all, people have tendency to forget it. So, I have to put it in writing what will allow you to go back and refresh it Or even better ask some questions, if you have any.

I will try to put all our posts on different pages, too keep topics separately and easier to access. Hopefully something good will come out of this new project.
